REVELATION! ADDING IS NOT THE SAME AS MULTIPLYING

No adding is not the same as multiplying lol....when working with my string blocks i kept adding the figures up as it takes 4 small blocks to make 1 big block...well when i was trying to figure out how big i wanted to make the quilt i was suppose to multiply how many little blocks to make the total....grrrr instead i was adding so it seemed a lot less but didn't come out right....NOW i think i have it straight....but i had to make the bigger blocks before it sunk in...here are my piles of big string blocks so far...

have a whole lot more to go lol...i liked the other way of figuring better lol....no wonder my scrap box didn't seem to go down much lol....now i have added more to it....

as i have said in the last post a few days ago i have the maze #2 in the frame now and as of this morning i am half done...

i would like to be down to the binding by Christmas so i can sew it on while gabbing with the family Christmas day and maybe i wont nibble so much lol...

the rest of the week and the week end i will try to get some baking done....still not sure what i want to do....really not in mood to do any but that is subject to change at moments notice....i do that at times lol....

there is nothing pressing in the sewing department so i wont get bogged down with that....from the looks of the family room though i better do some cleaning....i did put some 'bags' of blocks away and straightened up the things i finished recently that go to other homes later so that is a plus lol....just household duties are in the way of my baking lol....i guess we will see what wins out lol....more later.....

MAZE TO NOWHERE QUILT IS IN THE FRAME NOW

I am quilting the 'maze to nowhere' quilt i mentioned in one of the last posts...i put it in the frame Friday and have been working on it most of the weekend, that is when i wasn't in the sewing room tinkering around

this quilt design seems to be hard for me to find what looks right as a quilt stencil....i am hand quilting it so it wont have the all over design that it would if machine quilted....so i designed a double box design with a inside box design...i wanted something that was going to touch maybe all of the seams in the block...then when i quilt the design i go back and quilt in the ditch the seams where the blocks meet...that is the game plan for this next week...

but....i am sure i will take breaks and work on some other things like the string quilt blocks....i made more of them yesterday and when i counted them i had 59...that suprised me as i thought i only had 20 something...i do have enough of them now to make a oversize lap quilt but i think i will keep going for a few more...i dont want it too big as it will be quilted on the machine with all those seams and the bigger quilts are just too much for me to wrestle on my little machine....

when at the quilt ladies group meeting this last time one of the ladies i know has been doing quilting for people on her quilting machine....i think i am going to look into this and find out more...if she dont charge way too much i just might have a way of getting more done...i have several not publically seen yet that would be nice to have quilted and displayed or given to family members...

well the phone just rang and it will be a long call....more later.....

MY GRANDDAUGHTERS MODERN QUILT

I finally got the camera going and took a picture of my granddaughters quilt all done....it has been a year in the making...i kept putting it aside for other projects through the year and last month i made up my mind to get it done...here it is....

but you know there is always something right behind it ready to be done and i have quite a selection to pick from lol...

its a toss up between the color study quilt i call 'MAZE TO NOWHERE'...cant remember now if it is no. 1 or 2....this one has a green border...the other one that is done has a blue border (in the first pic)....both are pictured below...they are alike except for the borders....a case of making too many blocks lol...

this is my own block that i designed and it is a very easy block to sew ...the seams dont meet so you dont have to deal with bulk there and it goes fast ...it does take a lot of variety of colors though...it took me a long time before i got what i wanted to use gathered up but it gave me time to figure out just what kind of block i was going to make...

and the other quilt to be quilted is this one...
.
i would like to get it done too...i have the back for it that i want to use but dragging my feet on what to quilt in the light space....i love feathers and i think i have a stencil that will work....i will hand quilt i think as i am not good enough to do feathers on machine and i would like to give this one away as a gift later....more on my dilemma later lol

for right now i am nursing a back ache...i aggrivated an old injury last week carrying something i shouldn't have and now i suffer for it....and believe me winter weather isn't helping...but our weather could be worse and i am glad so far that the snow is north of us but soon i think we will have some....then i will have plenty of time to sew just hope my back settles down by then...

well lunch is coming  later this morning so i dont have to cook.... i better get dressed and i could use more coffee to get woke up...happy sewing....more later....

everyone was interested in the border on this one

ladies checking dinner cooking...homemade rolls coming out of the oven

during the afternoon i finished my grand daughters quilt...now i have to get the label made for it...i am so glad to have it done...now i can put another one in my hoop and start again lol...havent got picture of it yet....

taking things easy today...not feeling well again...and the weather is lousy, part of the problem i think....anyway just being lazy today gives me a chance to think about what to do over the week end...its here again lol...more later....

NEW FABRIC AND ONE BORDER DONE ON QUILT

I have been working on my granddaughters quilt this past week as i had planned to do....spontaneous quilting is ok for awhile but now i know i can get more done if i focus on one thing and stick with it...this is what i  did last week and now i am working on the outer border which will be a 2 needle one with just 2 rows instead of the 5 i was working with the inner border....at this rate i will be done sooner than i thought....sure hope it all goes well till the end....

Another fabric package came yesterday...and this is one of the color combos i found....

i think it will make a very pretty quilt of some kind and i also added to my browns more yardage....

now that i have most of the early bags of blocks out of my basket i can concentrate more on batiks and other things....i am getting away from the pastels more and more but my eye still goes to them and i can see many quilts from them....one of them being the sherbet quilt i talked about in another post...i will repeat that quilt one day...loved the colors in it...

i do have to leave the quilting alone for awhile today and do some cooking....i have bananas on the counter to make up into banana bread...i think iwill make as much as i can and freeze and give away later for Christmas...i will see how that goes today...more on this later lol....

my daughter and i are going next week one day grocery shopping...so i am making out a big list being she will help me...i dont have the stamina to shop in the big stores like i used to....i want to keep cabinet stocked with the winter weather trying to creep in....we could be in for a harsh winter this year....experts say no but havent they been wrong before???? lol....

what i know for sure is i will be making old fashioned potato soup for supper tonight...good comfort food and very warming for cold bones but for now finishing up my coffee and maybe another sweet roll before i start to move..yummy!.....more later.....

GRAND D. QUILT AND HAND QUILTING THOUGHTS

This is my granddaughters quilt i am working on right now...i took it out of the frame to relax it a bit so it wouldn't get those ring marks on it and i wanted to see how the stencil is working that i am using to hand quilt it....

This quilt is inching along ok without mishaps so far...i hope i dont jinx it by mentioning that lol....my hands started cramping last night while quilting but i have been working on it now 3 days straight so i think they need a rest...

Here is a closeup of the detail of the quilting in the inner border...it is working just fine....when planning a quilted border i usually pick something that doesn't fit lol...but this one popped out at me when i began to think about quilting it....i didn't want a lot of 'fru-fru' for this one as it is very contempory...i was even thinking of drawing boxes here and there freehand but didn't think i could be consistent enough....

THOUGHTS ON HAND QUILTING
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When i was first beginning this adventure of quilting was back in the 60's when i was accumulating lots of fabrics from sewing for my 2 girls....i had a huge box of scrap...my neighbor, an avid sewer encouraged me to make a quilt...so with her guidance i ventured into this world....i bet i picked her brain at least twice a week after that...lol
I learned a lot from her and from what i am told it was bred into me, as my grandmother was next to being a pro at quilting selling her quilts thoughout the county...she passed on when i was 5 so didn't get to know her long....i do have a big box of her quilting things though my aunt and mother passed onto me that i get out and go through now and then...
one of my early thoughts of hand quilting as you had to make sure the design was continueous without breaks all around the quilt...and another thought back then was no line shal cross another....so that played a role in getting me started...i was afraid i would make a mistake and they wouldn't fit right....now i am not afraid to be adventurous...lol...those thoughts came about from the older ladies at the time...when rules were strict and rigid about sewing...boy am i glad that changed lol....it has opened the door for  many new products and ideas for the sewer and quilter....
I will never be an expert quilter but i can do 18 stitches to an inch...now that is counting the top and bottom stitches...i am told that is how you count them...most of the time i average about 15....which i think it still ok...at least they dont look galloping along lol...
i have been teaching myself to machine quilt...not really good at it so i will stick to a lot of hand quilting along with learning new things so i am sure i will be adding little thoughts on hand quilting as i go along.....more later....
MUG RUGS & SMALL BAG DONE
here is a small bag i made this week...i need to make more of them to keep on hand for gifts...so easy to make and quick to add alittle bit of money or something to give as gifts when one is needed, dont want to wait till last minute to make them either....more on this later....
i also got all those mug rugs done
 and ready for my daughter to get hers and there will be some left in case that gal comes to check out what i have been doing....i need 1 each of lavender/purple ones and 1 browns/oranges and i would have a set of each to have on hand too....
this is the week i am to work on my granddaughters quilt too...i did quilt on it last night and now today my fingers are sore....i love the fabrics by Hoffman but they are harder to hand quilt because they are so dense and i put a hoffman batik on the back so makes it doubly hard to get a needle through it...when i get to the inner border it has a softer fabric for the top so will be easier...good thing as i have a 4 line border stencil to work on then....using 4 needles at a time....cant wait to get that far....almost there...maybe after tonight if i can work on it more....
got 2 of the 3 pkgs ready for mailing today....grrrr left out the note i wrote that went in one of them...so i will write a letter and send seperate....i am not going to tear open the package....used too much packing tape on it....lol... will mail them out Thursday when i go to town for a haircut that i desperately need....
well got to  check the cabinets and see if i can make a meal without going to the store...only need a light supper but that is what i lack is stuff to make something light but i could cook a 6 course full supper if i wanted lol....dont want to do that much work lol......more later......
NO SEWING TODAY, RELAXING
Thanksgiving day is over for another year...although i am thankful for a lot of things in my life that i think about all through the year...And i think this year i am aware more because of all the terrible things going on all over the world....
I went to my daughters home for dinner thanksgiving day...it was a nice relaxing afternoon for our family....thoughts were given to those we are missing and some revisiting the past popped up here and there....i worked on my grandmothers flower garden quilt most of the afternoon while visiting....my grandson took a picture of it when my daughter held it up....
Today no sewing...not much of anything going on...i am just tired and very lazy today so am taking a day off from everything except tv and computer surfing lol....but i have my day all lined up for saturday....every place i look i have projects ready to work on so i will be trying very hard to get most done by the end of the year.....and i would like to start the new year with my sewing room all cleaned up...will have to  work really hard on that one...just talking about it makes me tired lol......so at this point i am outta here....more later....
A DAY OF QUILTING AND FINISHING PROJECTS
today i am working on those mug rugs from the couple posts ago...all 13 of them....
i have been waiting for a thread order before i could finish them...i have almost all quilted now except the last 3 and about half with the binding on....taking a break from them right now so i dont get stressed out...lol
this machine quilting takes a lot of thread and if you work with a lot of different colored things it takes a lot of variety of thread....been trying to make room on my thread rack for all the quilting thread with 96 pegs to put the spools on you would think i have a lot of room....but it has to hold decorative thread, regular thread and now the quilting thread and i try to keep them seperate....i guess i dont have a pic in the computer to show at this time....
i have also been sewing some small bags to use as tuck in gifts....i like to keep them on hand for graduation gifts and for other times of the year...with a little gift of money to put inside i am good to go with no stress lol....
speaking of stress i went to the grocery store out of town yesterday and was shocked at the price they had on a small container of strawberries....$5 a box....now i know they are out of season here and they are grown in florida and california and so far no bad weather to make the price go that high so i went to Walmart to see what they had....hmmmm, theirs was $4 and pennies for a container twice the size of what i was looking at in the grocery store....i think the store was trying to make more than a couple bucks on each box...needless to say no one was buying them...one lady looked at me and her mouth dropped...you could almost read what she was thinking lol....
not a lot to talk about here today....unless you want to hear about the laundry i have to do and the other fruit i am cutting up to take to my daughters tomorrow lol....more later.....
HAPPY THANKSGIVING
GRANDMOTHERS FLOWER GARDEN TIP
i learned something about adding blocks on the ends of rows of the gfg quilt on the left today....it is hard to know where you are with the blocks unless you lay it out and pin where you want the block....if i hadn't double checked myself today i would have sewn at least2 blocks in the wrong places and would have had to rip out...
i have been working on these quilts this week...in various stages...cutting more white hexes, yes again....cutting a couple more flowered print hexes and sewing hexes into flowers and finally working on the rows sewing posies into place....i sure spent the hours working on these quilts....
when i wasn't doing that i was string block making....i found out from my youngest daughter that she likes quilts of a lot of colors, no matter the pattern....i didn't realize this but i should have being she likes primitive furniture...no wonder she grabbed the old 4 patch quilt i made a long long time ago i was going to trash...all made from scraps from the clothes sewing i did for the girls back in the 60's....i thought it got threw out lol....i am sure she will like the string quilt when it gets that far.....my other daughter said she wasn't too crazy about string blocks...talk about 2 girls and different personalities lol
i am still waiting for the thread order before i can work on the mug rugs and i have been getting the boxes ready that i am sending to friends in Texas and i hope to send one to Georgia also if i can find the right thing....and i have one to send right here in Il too...the dining table is a mess of boxes and rug mugs and no room to sew...ugh....that isn't good lol....
and to top it off i wasn't feeling good today for some reason....i had planned on going grocery shopping and looking around today but didn't trust my body to co operate....going to eat light for supper so maybe things will settle down...its the wrong time to be sick for sure with Thanksgiving just 2 days away lol....
well not a lot to talk about tonight....just sewing when i feel like it....going to lay down for a bit and watch the evening news...sure hope there is some good news for a change.....more later...
A DAY OF MUG RUGS
there are 13 mug rugs sitting here on the table...yesterday my daughter came with 6 mugs and wanted mug rugs for them for Christmas presents....well when i opened the bag of leftover Christmas prints i found a whole bunch of scraps all sizes of  them...
after i did those 4 Christmas quilts last year i must have put all the scrap in the bag and put all of it back in the cabinet and forgot about it....
anyway i sorted all the strips short and long for mug rugs and i just kept going with them till i used up all but a few scraps and most likely they will end up in the string blocks later on....
after my daughter picks out the ones she wants  that will leave me 7 unless i make one more to make 2 sets of 4 for give aways....but i cant work on them now till i get another thread order....this order will give me thread enough for all the quilts i have to quilt sooner or later and a few i havent thought up yet lol.....i was running out of a couple colors so had to get them replaced also .....
tomorrow is thursday and i have to get to the post office and get my box of quilts sent off to New York....i want to include a letter with it so will draft it tomorrow but tonight i am too tired brain wise to think what i want to say....
got some more of my fabric order today and i like what i picked out...in fact i cant wait to get it washed and ironed so i can work with them lol....
well i need something to drink i am dryer than a piece of dirt in a drought....more later....
SMALL QUILT DONE
the sun is out today but i am sure its deceiving as the temp is just above freezing....i was suprised this morning when i looked out the kitchen window to see ice in the corners of the window....i dont think there should have been....maybe the window isn't tight anymore...will have to look into that i think....
saturday i walked by this quilt laying on the table ready for quilting and i said to myself several times during the morning 'i better quilt that today' and the last time i thought why not just sit down and do it now...lol....
so i did....got it all done including the binding before the day was through....hopefully these are the last of the pastel patches i cut out years ago....they have to be at least 20 years old lol....i had a habit of cutting way too many squares for things back then....but then i was making a lot of baby blankets for kids so i guess i thought i was ahead of the game....well they all grew up and now their kids are having kids and i am back making baby things again for great neices and nephews ...not as many though....
i wanted to make a quilt top for my good friend who is very sick with diabetes and other health problems but after figuring, i couldn't use the fabric for that particular pattern... i didn't have enough so now i am looking for another pattern to use....
Not sure what the rest of the day will bring....this morning i worked on sewing the posies to the main part of one of the gfg quilts...i think this week i will work on that then by Thanksgiving day i will need to baste more white hexes again so that will be my sewing while i am visiting and eating thanksgiving day lol....
but for now i am just going to get another cup of coffee and ponder my next move.....more later.....
CHALLENGE PART 2 BLOCK
here is my block for the part 2 of a challenge i entered in another group...this is just one block and its huge.... but the challenge was to add 'flying geese' around the outside of the whole block and get them to work perfectly...this was my entry....
i really like this block but then i like quilts with stars too...they work for traditional and modern quilts both and they are pretty easy to make....i am thinking of making one row and adding 1 more star and 9 patch to make a runner with a border and flying geese around that....i do believe it would make a striking table runner....
in one of my blogs i follow today i found an address for sending quilts to new york because of hurricane Sandy...other day i found one but they only wanted bed size ones...this one today will take the smaller ones too...so i think i will send a couple including the one i am finishing that was pictures yesterday....it could wrap a child and then i will send one that will be good for a baby or toddler....i just cant imagine being in the mess that is in new york and new Jersey right now...just terrible...
as i have mentioned i kind of lost my confidence in machine quilting recently, i wasn't that good to begin with being a beginner and i have had a runner that i wanted to do something special on with a design and was scared to try it cause i thought i would botch it...well yesterday i got brave after i quilted the crazy strings one i thought i could work on the runner...it went ok and i even put a design in the blocks and when i get the binding sewn down i will post a picture of it....
for now i am going to lie down for a bit....i woke this morning too early but not feeling quite right and later found my digestive system is acting up so i am going to lie down and hope to feel better later on today....more later.....
SHERBET COLORS QUILT
i made this quilt a few years ago for my grand niece when she was expecting a baby....i have liked it really well and almost kept it as i ran out of a lot of the colors especially the blue border which i think is very striking and i wasn't sure i could ever make another close to the same colors again....
its a basic hour glass block with all colors combos without matching when its put together hence the prism effect....the picture shows them pretty good but the colors are more striking in person as i remember....cut two strips at least 1-1/2 inches, i think i used 2 inch strips...use triangle to cut and use both sides of the fabric making a positive and negitive and use both in the quilt for contrast....
well while i was ironing my new fabric yesterday i thought about this quilt and wondered if i had enough pastels to make another to put in my cabinet for my future GGChildren if they come to be....i looked up the picture again in my photo album i keep and again on line to see if i still had a record of it....
i recently found a blue that is almost the color though it has a hint of purple here and there in the fabric but i think it will be ok....i would like to be as bold as the one in the picture....i have yet to round up all the pastel solids or blends to make it ....i am sure it will be different from the picture because some of the blends i liked are no longer available...i already tried  reordering those lol....Hoffman watercolors really stood out in the quilt but they have discontinued several of them i used....but i will keep looking because one day soon i will be making another one similar to the sherbet colors above and i think bigger....it was so much fun to make!.....more later.....
POSIES READY FOR GFG QUILT, NEW FABRIC
wow new month, new week again....i am shaking my head and looking back...i always think i have missed something as fast as the time goes by....but i was busier than usual last week which is a good thing for the most part....
i had a fabric order come saturday which suprised me a lot because i didn't order it till Tuesday night...it really came through quick...the last order was over a week getting here and it was smaller order, go figure!....anyway i got right at washing and ironing the fabric...
i need to refine the tv remote-chair caddy as i have 2 of them to make before Christmas...my friend got the proto-type so now i can ask her what needs to be changed...will give her a call this week to see before i start changing my ideas...
the past 2-3 weeks have been taken up with sewing on the grandmothers flower garden posies getting ready for another row...this morning i counted how many i have ready for rows...27 so far...
that would be enough for almost 3 rows...so i guess that is one of the things i will be doing this next week...also i am going to try to get back to machine quilting again...i have been putting it off hoping a nice design will come to mind that i can do without botching it lol....i still dont have all my confidence back i lost a few weeks ago in regards to machine quilting....nor do i have that many patience either....
Monday will be a mixed up day for me i think....it is the anniversary of my first hubby death, it always does a number on me, some years more than others....no idea what this year will be like....i have plans to be very busy and maybe even a trip out of here for the afternoon....my daughters birthday is this week also so no one has a mixed up week more than her emotionally....i always try to get together with her then and this week will be no different...
i am making a mental note to reset my clocks back when i leave here...i was reminded in another group and yes i had forgotten to do it last night....grrrr....so i missed sleeping in that extra hour lol.....but it hasn't affected my coffee cup or my habit of drinking a couple cups before i get woke up so that is what counts lol....sooo i am off to get dressed and maybe go for a drive today even though the weather is starting to look nasty...and i suppose cold...more later....
MEETING NEW FRIENDS, FLOATING BOX QUILT
I had a very pleasant experience yesterday...in the past i have been invited to join a bunch of ladies that like to quilt and meet once a month....that was a few years ago....but after working odd hours like i did my habits have been turned upside down so was always hard to get going in the mornings....
Well, one of the ladies invited me again this past couple weeks and yesterday i was up earlier than usual so i got around and put together my little sewing bag and off i went to their meeting....i had a really good time...and there were more there than i expected, half of which i already knew....i fully intended to take my camera but i forgot it...i would have had some good pics of the things they were doing....
In december i will go again and its a potluck...so will be doubly fun i am sure...and i will make a note to be sure to take the camera...
When i came home yesterday i put together the floating box quilt aka/ easy block...i dont have the sash around the top and the left side yet which will be the same as the sash between the blocks....no border for this one....but i am wondering if there is too much light space in this quilt....
i will have to study it more before i decide what to do next...at first i wasn't liking it but it is growing on me...if i had an embroidery machine i would put something inthe boxes but that is not an option...
The ladies at the group where i was yesterday want to see my grandmothers flower garden quilt but i dont have a bag big enough for the 2 of them....i am deciding about making a huge bag to contain all of the gfg things even the box of hexes so it will have to be good size on the bottom...that way i can keep it all in one place and put it away when i am working on something else instead of having it all over while trying to work with other things....more on this later.....
I worked on finished the posie block i worked on at the meeting yesterday and now have quite a selection to pick from that is ready for adding to the rows of the grandmothers flower garden quilt...so that should be what i work on in the coming months till my supply gets down then start over again lol...one thing for sure is this quilt is teaching me to have more patience!....more later....
KEEP RECORDS OF YOUR WORK
Yesterday when i was wondering what to do for the day i thumbed through my 4x6 photo albums that i keep record of the things i make....no its not a brag book it is simply to record what i have done because a lot of things are a one of a kind and may not have a printable pattern to them....
this picture for instance can be a tool to work with...it is the picture of a baby quilt i made for my nieces baby...i knew the pattern i made it but i didn't remember how i put it together ...that was 12 years ago...so if i want to make another like it i would have to refer to the picture...there are items in my albums that go back over 30 years ago...
I wish i had done this years ago when i was a stay at home mom making things to sell out of my home...one item comes to mind...
smocked throw pillows were the rage in the 60's and i had a diagram to follow but i made a big mistake...i am left handed and i start things from left to right which changed e  the outcome of the smocking...well that mistake sold a lot of pillows because no one else had them like it....but i didn't take pictures of any of them so i dont remember how they looked....i still have the diagram but for the life of me i havent been able to duplicate how it did it....
There are several reasons for keeping pictures of your work...when i am depressed and down about myself i sometimes look at them and go back in time...those that were given away have a memory tied to them and at a glance i can look at the ones that i made that i still have without getting them all out of the cabinet and creating a big mess lol....
I should have even gone one step further by  adding the directions how i did an item, cost and the amounts of supplies needed but that would make me too organized and i doubt i could do that for long lol....all kidding aside its just a good thing to do no matter how involved you get with your sewing or your hobbies and something nice to pass on to the kids for them to see how you spent your time....more later....
CUTTING HEXES TODAY
THIS IS WHAT I AM DOING TODAY
I am doing hexes again....i am running low on white ones after adding them to several blocks recently...while in the sewing room marking and cutting more hexes i decided to cut a couple batches of prints to add to my box for future ones....i also basted a whole block (lavender/ lavender print in pic) ready to start sewing together and to the right of those in the pic is  some of  the posies i have sewn the white half way around ready for adding to the row....
I know it doesn't look like a lot but it is a lot of patience sewing....that is the hardest thing about this grandmothers flower garden quilt...it seems if i dont work on it when i first get up and have my coffee the day gets by me and i cant seem to get to the hexes....
today is no different either....i got that much sewing done on them but i have laundry to do and i think i will throw in a larger yardage piece of fabric to do up for the cabinet...i hate doing the bigger ones as i really dont like to do ironing of anything....that is one of the memories of my childhood...mom thought she had to have everything ironed back then...ugh!....i was so glad when wash and wear came along when my kids were growing up so i didn't have to iron much....lol
dishes are in the sink soaking right now...need to do those up....i was thinking when i was drawing water ....'how does one person dirty so many dishes?' lol....but then it isn't just one day of dishes either lol....
well off i go to the kitchen...more coffee, maybe some toast ...it might be a long time to supper if i get busy and one good thing...i cooked yesterday so supper is in a casserole dish for me tonight ..yay! lol.....more later....
ELONGATED BLOCK QUILT
I was looking back through my sewing pics and i came across a quilt pic i took in 2007...boy how time flies...i didn't think it had been that long since i made this quilt....
suprisingly i remember how much i liked it then and would like to make another one in different colors...that much i know...the colors?....no idea as of yet but now that i have it fresh in my mind i am sure i will think of color combos that might look good...the picture should have been taken the other way around to show off the colors better as the long boxes should be up and down....
I also noticed that lately i have been making blocks with sashes around them.... i wonder what the deal is with that....do i go with an idea till i wear it out???....hmmmm i will ponder that one!....lol...
my sister called last week and in the conversation she mentioned that she cant go anywhere without her walker now...and that got me thinking that she needs a walker caddy....so i have been 'scouting' my stash cabinet for a good print to quilt to make her one....i got called away so i think i will go back in and start looking again....i wanted to make her a tv remote chair caddy so i think i will just start a box and fill it and send...i was reminded that the postage will go up again in Jan '13 so it would be good to beat that if i could....wont she be suprised lol.....
i have a gazillion notes and figures sticking out of the box i keep my rulers standing up at the head of my table in the sewing room....some have written on them which of the items they were for and others dont....i found a notebook that i am starting to take them and transfer the notes to the notebook for safe keeping in case i want to go back and make another....some of them would be for quilts that have found a new home and i wouldn't have the dimensions otherwise...i should have done this a long time ago....sigh!
i made it to the store yesterday and got my chicken dinner for my supper and took advantage of the sales they had and by the time i carried my grocery bags to the house from the garage i was beat so i didn't make it to $general to look around....maybe today i might...my daughter informed me she was stopping by after she gets off work so i need to be here then....time has a way of getting away from me before i do what i say so we shall see lol....more later....
THIS AND THAT
While straightening up some in the sewing room this afternoon i found this folded up...i forgot i made this while back...it is the last of the tiny 16 patch blocks i put in the small quilt....not sure what i will do with it...maybe just quilt and put in cabinet...not one of the prettiest i can see....oh well we all have at least 1 dont we???? lol.....
this was an awkward day....i sewed a little on the easy blocks....i have added more to it...i decided to add sashes between the blocks...and i think the new name will be floating boxes...with the sashes they look like they are  just hanging in space....i revamped the dimensions again so may not make it as big....if that is so i have enough blocks made already ....i am adding about 6 more though with colors that i have not added yet...
i quilted 3 more mug rugs today also, couple more to do then will be caught up with that too....and i made a posie for the gfg quilt adding the white hexes half way around and its ready to add to the row of the quilt now....
other than the above i was pretty lazy today....so maybe the rest of the week will be more productive....more later....
BAG IS FINISHED
well here it is the week end again....i swear some of the week days get overlooked and the week end rolls around too quick, making the weeks just fly by....being busy makes them go by so fast too....
i got up in time today to see my saturday sewing shows on public tv....a regular sewing show which had a lot to do with quilting this week, Fons & Porter show about quilting, showing a new block and a Quilting Arts program....while watching them i put together another posie together for my Grandmothers Flower Garden quilt....
yesterday i worked on my bag i have started and finished it...and it all started because i didn't want to throw away a scrap of floral fabric...isn't it funny what peaks our creativity?....i got side tracked because i was waiting on a thread order to quilt it then got busy with other projects but now its all done....
i had quilted this before i lost my confidence in machine quilting and had very good luck with it at the time....i think this bag looks tropic for some reason , maybe the colors...here is a back view...wish i had, had enough floral fabric for the back...
i only have a scrap left of the green used for the bag...it was just the right color...this bag was truely built from scrap lol and it will make a great contribution to make my sewing portable...
i will be going to my grandsons birthday party later today so i will pack my bag with the mug rugs i made this week and finish them by sewing the binding down on them...right now its foggy and not very nice looking outside so i hope the sun comes out to burn off the fog so the wiener roast goes off without a hitch....
and for me i need to get around....have fabric in washer at the moment ready for dryer, need to take care of that and work in the kitchen so no major sewing today unless i do some when i get back home if i am not too full of hot dogs and marshmallows lol....more later....
STRINGS AND MUG RUGS
I didn't leave yesterday as i had planned....the weather was terrible....i got as far as the door and said 'no way'.....the wind was blowing, rain hitting the door and the temps were cold , yes really cold for a fall day....i was half way expecting snow or ice last night during the night....anyway it didn't seem like a day that was fit for anyone and i hate running round in the rain trying to stay dry.....so i just decided to stay home and enjoy something i like to do....SEW!
I got out my scrap basket and played in it all afternoon....i have some patience but after 4 hours of playing in scraps i am ready to quit....but i made 6 mug rugs of which i have yet to quilt...i thought maybe i would do it last night but i was too keyed up from being 'scrappy' all afternoon i didn't think i should machine quilt anything and get keyed up again or i wouldn't sleep lol.....
and i also made some string blocks while i was  playing....ok i counted them yesterday and there are quite a few but this morning the amount i have left me lol....i just know it wont be long and i will be thinking about how i am going to use them in a quilt....
the picture looks like they are single blocks but they are small stacks in each one, i just grabbed them and laid them out...i could have made a lot of them yesterday but working on mug rugs and strings at the same time takes a little more brain power especially when i was making a mono color mug rug....trying to use just one color in it while using lots different one in the strings....next time i think i will just stick to one item at a time...lol...
i hope today that i will quilt the mug rugs before the day is done and i still have the bag to assemble so would like to get that done also....but for now its coffee and breakfast time for me and i will see where my day takes me after that....more later....
MODERN RUNNER
I had been in kind of a slump the past few days...lost all confidence in my machine quilting and was just plain down....today would have been my wedding anniversary to hubby #2 so i suppose that could have been what started it...anyway i will leave this afternoon for awhile and get out ....that should help my mood...sure dont want to lose my sewing streak i have been on....
oh wow my baby grandson will be 17 this next week....it takes me back to his yowling, howling days ....he would not sleep when he was a baby....you almost had to get him in a wrestling hold to corral him so you could try to rock him to sleep....what a time we had....my daughter is having a wiener roast in honor of his and his cousins birthday which are 1 day apart on saturday....i checked the weather and its suppose to be a nice day but very chilly....but it will be nice anyway....
i had a call from a friend this morning who recently lost her hubby...i thought about her yesterday while quilting on my granddaughters quilt....she and a group of ladies meet once a month to quilt but they arent a guild...just some that like to sew...they have invited me several times to join them...well i need to make the effort....they meet at 9 am...i am lucky if i am up at 9am....by the time i get myself woke up its noon and they quit at 2 pm....that is about the time i think if that is the week they meet....i am going to vow to do better with this....
though i was down in the dumps this week i did manage to work on the easy block being i was cleaning off my sewing table....i had a lot of the scrap that was just right for those with a few  slices of the cutter...some i had more than one block and others just a single one but the scrap is off the table....
i now have 41 blocks made....and i have a lot of strips on the machine cabinet sitting waiting to be added ....after looking the strips over i think there will be a good variety of colors without cutting more....and it sure will use up a lot of pieces....
time to get going....coffee is gone and i need to get dressed and decide just where i will go this afternoon...hmmm weather looks rainy....grrrrr.....more later.....
EASY BLOCK
last night before i went to bed i ventured into the sewing room again and got out this block i have been working on....years ago i backed most of my quilts with poly/cotton fabric so have a lot of scrap from that...well being the frugal person i am i had to find a use for them...so the centers on this quilt will be the poly/cotton...it acts a little wierd when a too warm iron hits it so i didn't want a lot of little things from the poly/cotton so for now i am getting the bigger pieces used...this kind of looks like a signature block so people could sign their name on a block when they visit....just an idea....
i have quite a bit of 1 1/2 inch strips gathered and a lot of fabric that will work if i cut a strip or two....i can get 2 blocks out of one strip so that will be a plus....i already know the back of this quilt will be poly/cotton as i still have 2 bolts of it to use up...it is also going to be one i will donate to the nursing home...i have been working on it when my little scrappy basket get out of hand and i need to do something with the contents....
if i am relaxed enough today i am going to resume my machine quilting...sure wish i had one of those big long arm machines but i dont have the room for it unless i put it in the family room...and that is an idea....the sewing room stuff creeps to the family room anyway lol....
well its time i got busy with anything if i am to get something done today...so have a great week all....more later....
TV REMOTE HOLDER
today was a productive day...though i did not know it until i went in the sewing room....when i saw some of the prequilted fabric i have been working with trying to use up i happen to think about my friend Mary....she has been after me to make her a new holder for her tv remote for her chair arm....i made her one years ago and she had worn it to threads...it had several pockets in it...for the life of me i could not remember when she was telling me about it just what it looked like...today i drafted instructions on a new one for her....i do remember the old one was small so i vowed to make this one bigger....
this time i wrote down instructions and measures , i didn't do that before...this one didn't have as many pockets but bigger pockets...i did use some of the prequilted fabric of which i quilted over it with a fabric back...added pockets in a co ordinating fabric and divided them into seperate ones....and added binding all around...the picture really doesn't do it justice but at least you can tell
...the pink fabric isn't showing up very good...the darker  part hangs over the center of chair arm and you have pockets (the pink) for a mag and tv remote in one pocket and a mag in the other one on the outside and a couple deep pockets that tuck down in the chair cushion to hold it in place...those pockets can hold maybe kleenex or smaller mags or puzzle books, what have you....
i dont mind telling you she was very happy when she found out what i brought her this afternoon and we had a good visit...she also showed me the old one and it was in shreds lol....i am going to make myself one sometimes this week i think...maybe that will keep the remote from falling off the chair arm all the time....
if you have been following this blog you know i have been in the middle of a block challenge and i got part 2 done last night and i love it....it was a big block to begin with and with adding a border and the flying geese to it make it the size of a table topper....i will  show it when our host posts all the pictures.....
my daughter was here yesterday afternoon and during our conversations she suggested that i offer some of my things on line for sale....i have thought about it but still undecided....not sure there would be much interest....more on this at another time....
today when i went to the store as i was paying the checker i noticed that one of my rings were missing...it was one that was given to me ...more sentimental than worth anything but mine just the same....that made me pretty sad as i thought it was gone forever....but when i got a glass of ice tea later i found it in the ice bin...literally on ice lol....boy that sure did change my mood in a hurry...my fingers must be getting skinny so i suppose i should stop wearing my rings so wont lose them forever....
well its too late to start anything sewing wise tonight or i wont sleep so i guess i will check out the blogs i follow and call it a night....more later....
RUNNER FROM QUILTERS CACHE
well yesterday didn't turn out like i thought it was going to....instead of working on part 2 of the challenge i committed myself to i tinkered around in Quilters Cache looking at blocks....
i have been making a lot of 'flying geese' units for that challenge so i thought why not make a few more...in another project and that happened to be a runner...
yesterday i was looking through the bolts i have stacked on the floor in the sewing room and found these fabrics....so what else??? right then and there i got to work on a runner...after a couple hours this is what i came up with
i dont think it took a great picture...more striking in person ...it measures 15x35 inches....simple pattern but i didn't want to get really elaborate so that it took too much time.... i have a lot of other things that will take a lot of time...i finished the border this morning while drinking my coffee...
if i have patience today i may do more machine quilting...got a bag to do and put together, and my challenge part 2 is ready for quilting and if i run out of those i have 2 small quilts i can put together and quilt.....
on the agenda today i think its the kitchens turn....the dishes are creeping out on the counter now so its time to get them washed up and i will need to spend some time cooking today...maybe enough for a couple days then i can get in some good sewing time....
my son was here last night and he helped me put the summer chairs in the garage for the winter....oh how i hate to do that cause it looks so bare on the porch even though there is a metal bench that stays out in the winter....and of course my other little bench that i sit on when i feel couped up in the winter that is on the back porch on the south....i put my coat on and sit in the sun on calm days if there isn't snow there....people might think i am crazy doing that but it sure helps to keep away depression from lack of sunlight....
i could never be a cave person....well maybe i might if it was a sewing cave with all the goodies....ok i am outta here...lol....more later......
MUG RUG SET, CHALLENGE BLOCK
It seemed to be mug rug friday here at home....i made 3 mug rugs and quilted them....i already had 1 blue one made but when i was rummaging around in the scrap box i ran across a lot f blues so again i got side tracked and made three of them that would co ordinate with the one already made...it was a good idea as martha would say....i just finished binding them....i even had leftover binding that was right...though i had to add a few inches to 1 of them...luckily i had a small piece of same fabric in the gfg quilt stack of fabrics....
Saturday i worked on part 2 of a challenge from another group....the host threw a curve at us....she announced there would be a part 2 to it after we finished with part 1...and boy did she!....if we did the easier one the first time we had to do a harder one on part 2 so i am working on a harder one this time.....we are to add flying geese to the outside of the block and make it come out even all the way around....i worked on the block and before i quit i wanted to make sure the flying geese was going to work before i quit so with some figuring before i started i just had to know.....i had added a border first and then needed to know just how many flying geese it was going to take....yay i had figured right...that made my day...
this morning i cut out the rest of the squares for the geese and now ready for the other 3 sides then it will be on to quilting and binding the block....this will be table topper size of about 26 inches when finished so will be a nice size fall one that is looking good!....
i can post part one now of the challenge being she posted the pics of everyones
this measures about 18 inches square and the border and hst are what we had to add to the already block from quilters cache....i chose Christmas colors and i even chose a new name for the block....'Ribbons on my Christmas package'...it seemed very appropriate lol....
the sun is shining and is looking very fall today....if i was smart i would be out taking some nice fall pictures before all the leaves are gone....from my family room window i can see my tree just ouside the patio is turning what looks like an orange this year.....if so it will be very pretty so will have to check it out...
well off to get a little more coffee before i move on with the day....week end is almost over again and new week is here...make it a good one.....more later....
