STRINGS ARE MAKING ME A LITTLE BUGGY

For the last two days I have been making 'string strips' for a border of one of my new quilts....

I haven't measured to see if I have enough made but it looks like I should have.....

I only worked out of my little basket that I keep close by to add anything under 1 1/2 inches wide...this picture doesn't show it overflowing...that is why I started making them this week...because the scraps weren't going in the basket anymore lol and I couldn't stand it...now the basket pretty much looks like the picture...almost empty....so glad I didn't have to get out the big box that has more scrap in it...that is always a huge mess if I get it out....

I will have more pics later more little stuff has been made and I have a quilt to show that you haven't seen yet ...it too needs borders ...in fact these strings is part of the border for it....

It turned off cold this week and I had to turn on the furnace...I didn't think I would keep it going but its cold outside and there is no sense of me freezing...my arthritis gives me enough trouble....

well I am off to bed its been a long long day and I am really tired.....till next time....more later....

THESE ARE WAITING FOR BORDERS

This is what I have been doing the last few days....

on 1 quilt I added the rest of the loose blocks to it...the hour glass one and I posted about the butterflies on my roses quilt...well its waiting for a border as is the hour glass one and my 'poe' quilt is also waiting for a border and then we come to the modern quilt with all the browns and oranges and reds....it too is waiting for a border if I put one on it....I have a lot of strips cut of the pieces of that quilt so might add thin border dark one and a piano keys of the leftovers....have to decide on that....as you can see I have been working up a storm....

With all that I got my back outta whack so am letting it rest for a couple days....it was warm in the sewing room so I had the fan on too and me in a cool draft is not a good idea...my arthritis really squawks at that....but then I could use a couple days off from sewing...the kitchen needs attention...

About the mess on the sewing table...well I am working on it...I have put blocks away that have bags already started and have cut squares and triangles of various scraps and I got the brainy idea for another quilt I could see in the scrap with the 1 1/2 strips ..

so I started a boomerang quilt....if no one in the family wants it I will probably look around for a charity to give it too later....with the help of my box of 2 inch strips I am sure I can find another 4 rows to complete the center....more on this later....

As you can tell I go from one to another without a second thought to taking pictures to record the events but eventually I get them taken...just know my blog is important and if anyone can get help reading it it makes it worth while....more later.....

HERE AND THERE BLOCK MAKING TODAY

First I want to  say hi to Patsy...I liked your comment and glad to see that you are working on your hexes....stay with it you will be rewarded in the end....

I am having a little letdown day today....kind of a double whammy....its the holiday and family is all busy with their lives and it would have been my second hubby birthday today....so I am trying not to think about 'things' and just live!....Nothing in particular going on except I have been working in scraps most of the day and I haven't even got dressed....still in my pj's....but what's the dif....its only me here .....

I put the bag of the mistake WIP blocks away for now...for some reason it really bugs me to work on them....I think because they are hard to press with all those seams and the fabric likes to move too much when working on it...not a real tight weave....

I got out the 2 inch strip box and the 1 1/2 inch strip box and started making 'boomerangs'....I had a lot of 1 1/2 inch x 3 pieces so it worked out quite well and I am getting more off my counter....finding lots of good combos lol....

Also made a set of 4 mug mats...really pretty...will have pics this week for sure....had to do a little fussy cutting on those but they look very modern and it uses up a piece of fabric I had laying around since I made my daughter a quilt...

I had a very difficult time going to sleep last night and didn't get up till almost noon today so not much day left then so I have not eaten much and need to figure out my supper....maybe get a shower, wash hair ...see if it improves my mood......more later....

BORDERS AND MORE BORDERS

I knew I had been sewing a lot the last week so sleeping in this morning was welcome...but I missed my sewing shows that run on Saturday mornings...grrrr....makes the second week I did this....between that and the PBS fund drive the station has I am missing a lot of shows...especially fons and porter shows....

Getting back to sewing...yesterday  while looking at the stack of fabrics and ufos  on one of the chairs in the sewing room I ran across an old hour glass quilt top that I decided needed to be made bigger....the extra blocks were right there with the quilt top but I hadn't done anything with them so yesterday was the day!....when I leave the net I am going in and see if I have fabric in cabinet for the 2 borders I want to use on this quilt....it has a big mixture of colors in it so its hard to picture what will look good as a border....I don't like the borders to stick out like sore thumbs so it will have to blend with the quilt....I hope I have a big yardage so I can use for a back and maybe the borders too ...more on next week.....

I also have the 'Butterflies on my roses ' quilt ready for border too....didn't have enough of the blue for the border left but I use that blue a lot so ordered more for it....if the color doesn't match up  when it comes then I will use the rose color as the border...more on this next week too....

Hopefully I can get the dining table unloaded so I can pin those two small blue quilts and quilt them this week....so much going on right now and omg I need to figure out if I am doing Christmas sewing or not....

Ok gotta get out of here...more pictures coming next week when I get the borders on these quilts and who knows where I go from there.... I am trying to post more with pictures of what I am doing...not always easy to stop  and think to take pictures as it happens....its always a surprise around here lol....more later....

HAD TO REMEASURE

Ok.... I didn't measure right!!...last night when I was starting to put together the 'butterfly' blocks I remeasured the block and its 6 inches not 6 1/2 inches...that threw off the other measurement so its back to the sewing machine for another row of blocks to make it just over 73 inches...I gotta look and see if I have more of the plain blue in the cabinet...I would like to use it as the big border with the blue print as the little border ...that way I can do some extra quilting on the border and have it show up....

not sure the red would look as good as a border but might have to use it anyway....I really didn't want to buy more fabric for this one....I am even hoping I have enough blue print for the back...

I think I will work more on this quilt today at least get the other 6 blocks done anyway...it sure is going together fast which is good....

The sewing table is a complete mess again but I think I will take the time and cut some scrap up into squares or make a few more small items....

Not much else going to go on except I have a very large grocery order to take to the store....I sure am glad to have delivery at times like this as its so hard on my body lugging groceries from the garage to the house.....more later...

46 BLOCKS SO FAR

I worked last night on more blocks for the 'Butterflies on my roses' quilt and now have 46 made....

if I stop at 53x73 I only need 8 more blocks...I am hesitant to go bigger as the fabric may run out and I wouldn't have enough for any kind of borders and I think this one would look odd without borders....

I almost hit the panic button yesterday....I went looking for the red fabric for the butterfly quilt...but could not find it...I went in several times and looked in the cabinet but no show....then finally I looked on the pink shelf...there on the very bottom of a stack was the red....why it was there is beyond me....also I see its on a cardboard board...

A few years ago I thought it was a good idea to put yardages on cardboard but I forgot about the discoloring fabric can get from it so I took all of them off the cardboard but I guess I missed this one...but will get it done today

Got to leave the sewing alone for awhile today....sticker time for the car and if I am not careful I will let it expire forgetting about it so I am making a point to get to town today and get it and put on the car before I get out on the road and get a ticket....... so for now more later....

ANOTHER NEW QUILT THIS TIME FROM A UFO

I needed something to do last night while watching the Emmys so I drug out my clothes basket of quilting blocks packaged up.....while rummaging through it I found a quilt I started years ago....

the more I worked on it the less I liked it....the blocks were just too big for the size the quilt was going to be.... and I just plain didn't like the layout...so I put it back and basically forgot about it till last night....

I sat there tearing this quilt apart trying to think of how I could use the triangle squares and 4 patches without tearing them apart too...well before I went to bed I thought of something....its a wonder I slept lol....so this morning I went in and started sewing a new block design using them....this is what I came up with.....

I must say I do like it better....I am going to call it 'Butterflies on my roses' quilt lol....I used to have rose bushes that color and the dark looks like butterflies lol....I have enough of all the colors to make a big quilt if I want so we will see just how this evolves but the scale of the blocks will be better I think than a huge 24 inch block.....

My basket of blocks????.....I had to get a bigger basket this time as the smaller one was overflowing ....

well I did sort it out and found some scrap material to use in my upcoming scrap quilts so that eliminated 2 bags in there ....trying to figure out how to use the bag of  odd blocks for things....ok time to figure out my supper now after all this....more later.....

NEW QUILT TOP

I have been busy again, oh I know I say that every time but its true....I have pictures today lol....this is just a small sampling of the ones I have been working on...First there is my disappearing 9 patch quilt...

its ready for border if I put one on it...it is already 50x70....I only have enough of the light green left that I can use for it...this quilt had strikes against it from the beginning....first it was 1 way print...next it was such a dark emotional print lending itself to I think Edgar Allen Poe...the print has ravens on it so I nick named it my 'Poe' quilt...next when I ordered it I thought it was black and beige but when it came it was black and very olive green....I still like the print and I hope I have taken away from the dark emotion that the print first conveyed....it doesn't make me unhappy at all...by cutting up the print it changes things....

I had some 2 1/2x3 1/2 scraps left over from a small quilt that was just right for mug rugs without changing anything....

so here is a set of 4 ready for gifting....I have been going through a blue period in quilting this past week....I have 2 blue quilt tops to show you next time...

I have been doing so much sewing that I have my neck and back in an uproar right now so today is a no sew day.....

I am still working on clearing off the sewing table but the more I clean off the more I use it and add to the mess but I am gaining....I wish there were 4 of me so I could get more done in a day lol.....more later.....

I WANT TO COMPLAIN

Yes I want to complain today....but first let me lead up to it...

Yesterday we had our quilt meeting which went very well. We even had 6 new members....there were lots and lots of good show and tell quilts to oogle over lol.....

A lady brought her pattern for a honeycomb quilt....lots of fussy cut pieces to make up different blocks to make a quilt....I was  happy to see it as I have been thinking of making one to vary my hand stitching pattern instead of all hexes....

This is the one I want to do....

Here is the problem  I usually look in Hancocks of Paducah big catalog for ideas on color throughout the catalog then I go back and decide if I want to buy more fabric for the quilt to either fill in with what I have or just buy enough for the whole quilt....but they have stopped publishing a big catalog...and instead send out these little flyers with just a few color swatches on them....JUST NOT THE SAME!...I am very disappointed...also since they have changed their on line site around its harder to follow than it used to be so I don't go there as much as I use to....Guess I will have to change my method of planning process....

Today my thoughts are on the honeycomb pattern so I suppose sooner or later I will end up in the sewing room to see what I have that I can use from my stash for this quilt....I have the yardage figured for the big amounts of the pattern I need so I can proceed with that....more on this later....

SOME SMALL SCRAPPY THINGS DONE

I did get a couple little things machine quilted yesterday...nothing glamorous , some mug rugs
I intend to give away as a gift later this month to a friend...I gave her one I was experimenting with long time ago and she said she used it all the time...so I think its time I made her a new one and some extra lol....

and  I made a bigger snack mat and a potholder....all were from that messy scrap pile on my sewing table with a couple extra colors added....I had some off  size oblong pieces that were too small for other blocks so I put them end to end for the snack mat and potholder...turned out ok....I might use up some of the other colors too...

Lately I have been on the lookout for some small items to make for Christmas....I am not doing too well in that department....more on this later....

My granddaughter was here yesterday and she had opinions on the baby quilts I am making...most of the time we agree on things but yesterday she made me rethink color so I changed my mind about a border on one of them...more on this later too.....

Today my thoughts are on tomorrow...our quilt meeting is then and I am going to take the Grandmothers flower garden quilt for show and tell as well as the last three quilts I made...I don't think I showed them yet either....while at the meeting I will be working on taking out the basting and looking over the back of the Grandmothers Garden quilt for loopy loops and hexes that might be sewn too loose....don't want the seams to spread when stretched in the hoop....

Well its about time I got to work for today....its moving fast and I am soooo slow soooo more later......

QUILT POLICE AND QUILT REALITY

Sitting here today with my coffee in hand trying to wake up from a no sleep night (just a 3 hr nap was all I had) is making me thinking about one of the comments made recently....

In this comment she speaks about making a new quilt before the last one is done....I thought about this and what would happen if I waited to start another before the last was done....

Well first off I probably would never make a quilt again lol.....I seem to be a person that has to have a dozen things going at once to the point where I get frustrated because it seems nothing is getting done....but I get bored easily....I am sure I am not the only person that gets this way...lol....

One big advantage is when I have a lot of quilts that I work on at a time when they all get close to being finished I will have a lot finished at once making me look like a quilt wizard lol working so fast when in reality its been a long time lol....

One thing for sure this ole gal is soo glad there is no quilt police for if there were I would be in quilt jail for a long time for the many short cuts I find along the quilting adventure and the different ways I find to do things and I am sure the quilt police wouldn't like the fact that I am left handed and that I do things my way to get results.....

So for all you younger and more inexperienced people who want to try quilting go ahead and feel free to try new things....who knows you may become an expert on the subject one day......more later.....

WELCOME TO MY "MESS"

Today I worked in my sewing room....it is a total mess!....I have a bad habit of starting too many quilts at a time and have fabric all over the place....Sometimes I think I should just gut the room and start over.....but I don't know where I would put all the stuff in the room elsewhere.....

Today I cut 2 inch squares and some 3 1/2 squares...

and a couple other shapes out of leftovers including the ends of strips from when I cut out hexes....there was a mountain of those....too nice colors to just throw out...

I tried to straighten up the counter and organize the quilt UFOs that are scattered all over grouping them and bagging them for the time being...

well I didn't get far with that either cause I made some blocks as I was trying to organize...while doing all this I found a 9 patch quilt partially put together and a mountain of 9 patches waiting for sashes....I will have to figure that one all over again just not sure where I was going with it....

As you can see I have a lot of work to do....there is a chair to the left of the table that is piled high with UFOs and fabric that needs washed and other things waiting to be taken care of....I wonder if I will ever get caught up....more later.....

NO SEWING TODAY...SHOPPING INSTEAD

Today I didn't sew at all....my granddaughter called and asked me to go into the city with her....she did her shopping which was a couple of quick errands which amounted to me getting 7 hexes basted while sitting in the car waiting...she was quick lol...

Later we did shopping for me, well she did some too in Joanns fabric store....I got a batt for the gfg quilt...had a little thought when I went to get it...low loft or regular loft...the low loft won out....hope its the right way to go...I usually like a little puffy in my quilts but I will have a lot of very little stitches so the low loft will be easier to get them....

After that we ate at one of my favorite places for BBQ chicken then got some groceries and came home ...after all that I was really tired....I am thinking I may be low on potassium again...I suppose I should go in for tests again...

Tomorrow I hope to finish up that end on the quilt..then off to the next step...I have some other small quilts I just might work on for a few days and get them out of the way...one for sure will be hand quilted...not sure about the other one...it might be a charity quilt and they like them machine quilted...more on this later....

I did get some of my fabric washed and ironed and I looked around and I found more so I will stack it all together and proceed to group loads by color till I get them caught up...hopefully before I need them lol......

Well its after midnight and I am tired so maybe I will get a good nights sleep....hope so....more later....

DETAIL OF BORDERS ON MINI GRANDMOTHERS FLOWER GARDEN QUILT

I am almost done with the mini floral grandmothers flower garden quilt top....I finally have pictures to show you....I made sure I got some before I completely finished the top to show the border sequence I have been working on...

Those of you that have been following me may remember I am making several flower garden quilts for my family...here is the latest one
When I got toward the end of all the rows I thought it would look nicer to add a border around for a more finished look and this is the result...I don't have the closest end at the bottom of the picture finished but I have close ups of how I am doing the border...
In this picture 2 of the ends are tricky...the first thing was to make sure the back and forth of the design would be even...so that meant I had to add 1 white hex to fill in before I added the blue....on the right edge of picture a white hex has been added already...that made the see saw effect across the row...
In this picture you can see how I added the blue and the outer row of white...I sewed hexes together matching the see saw effect...I thought it would take me forever to do this but actually it went pretty fast...The points and 1/2 of the white hexes will be trimmed off to make straight when the binding goes on....

On the side rows all you do with them is fill in with a partial block which will make them even then sew hexes end to end with each other and sew to quilt....

When this part of the quilt is finished I will have to check the backside for Loopy-loops and take the basting out...then I can quilt....

Today I hope to get some more fabric washed and ironed to use right away in 2 small quilts and I want to make some mug rugs sometime this week....I am always doing something if not I get very bored lol.....more later....

BUSY, BUSY SEWING

Oh I am so behind...I promised pictures but truly they are coming....July isn't the best month for me....both my parents passed in the last two weeks of this month , different years as well as my second husband so its a sad time of year for me...this year particular...maybe its because I am getting older too....anyway I am always glad to see this month pass...

I have been staying busy as much as I can....I have been concentrating on the mini flowered grandmothers flower garden....I finished all the rows and laid it out and decided to add a blue border and finish off with a white border...both are hexie rows so its narrow by border standards lol....but it will be a way of individualizing each quilt as I do them except for the 2 big ones...I will explain more when I post pictures....

I also had border fabric left from 2 different projects and decided to make up a lap quilt with them....2 blues...with a thin white border....all blue otherwise...something different but out of my cabinet....

Today sometime I have to wash up some white and part of the blue fabric that is going into the quilt I just described....I found more of the 1 fabric in cabinet but lighter in shade but will be good for the back and maybe the outside border of this little quilt...I am sure I will find more fabric that needs washed that can go in with the load so it might be an afternoon of ironing...

Not much else going on other than sewing and I do promise pictures....I just don't take the time to do it.....more later....

HOLIDAY PROJECT WAS PUT ASIDE TILL NOW

The holiday weekend didn't go as I thought it would....I had a project all ready to work on to keep me busy...It was a small quilt using disappearing 9 patch block and using just 2 different blues leftover from other quilt borders....I did get the center done and added a navy thin border and it is waiting for an outer border to finish the top....but....

My son in law's father passed away Friday night and I was involved with things for the family through Sunday...Monday I had to rest....I completely wore myself out cooking things....I guess I don't have the strength to do that much any more...

I gave up big dinners years ago because of the stress it was on my body....I still hate it because I did enjoy cooking for a crowd but my legs and back just cant take it....

No pictures today but I will take them later...I will also have pictures of putting the fill in sections to the mini flower garden quilt.....I have been doing hand sewing on that quilt when I don't do anything else and I think I am on the last row of this one....I will know more when I lay it out and look at it again.....if you want more info on the flower garden quilts - the small flower and the bigger flower ones are in the label section under GRANDMOTHERS FLOWER GARDEN....if you haven't tried one of these you should its very rewarding but very time consuming...

Its lunch time here and my banana for breakfast didn't go far so I guess I need a sandwich to get going and oh yes work on the mess in the kitchen....don't know how I dirty so many dishes lol.....more later......

BRINGING PHOTO ALBUM UP TO DATE

This past week I have been going through all the pictures of things I have made lately...I keep a picture record of them in photo albums...

it started out as reference in case someone wanted alike things or patterns but as years  have gone by its nice to look back so I have been making printing pictures to catch up with the albums...

I have a friend  who is basically a shut in and through the years has kept up with what I have done till lately....say the last 14 years....the last time I visited her she wanted me to tell her about all the things I had done...well its too many to sit and talk about...I couldn't remember even if I tried....So I will take my little photo album and she can see...which I think is better than talking about it lol.....

I have been working on a big WIP that has been put away for a few years...I cant mention it yet as I want to keep it kind of a surprise and she might be looking at this blog...but soon as she finds out about it you will see pictures....most likely when I get it in the hoop...Hah! I doubt I can keep it a secret then...nowhere to hide it lol....

Well I have gabbed enough so its off to do whatever...more later....

ELABORATE QUILTING ON FINISHED QUILT

Sunday is suppose to be a day of rest but right now I am deciding whether to sew most of the day or leave and take a drive and eat dinner out somewhere...the weather is nice so far but the ever looming threat of rain is in the forecast...

I did wind up the camera this morning and took the picture of the finished quilt I did for my granddaughter...she wanted a scrap of fabric that had fairies on it made into a quilt...the picture is a little off color..that is robins egg blue....not lavender....
yeah it was a challenge considering I only had about a fat quarter to work with....so there were a lot of sashes and borders which meant a lot of  blank space to deal with...well I decided to get elaborate with my quilting....

I had a nice big feather border stencil but it had no nice corner with it so I tried designing one but I could not do it justice so I found a shell block stencil that worked really good I think...its the most elaborate hand quilting I have done in a long time...

Other sewing I have been doing is the flannel receiving blankets I told you about in last post...I did 3 of them...I haven't made up the rest of the leftover fabric but they will be lap pads I think...I will be sending them away to a family member soon along with some other things...

I have more to tell ya about but not right now..it was a very productive week and into the weekend so keep looking more is coming...I am lovin' this sewing streak!.....more later.....

DOWNSIZING SEWING TODAY

I am on a break right now lol....I have been in high gear since I got up this morning with ideas....I was looking in a cabinet of different kinds of fabric (yes I have my quilting fabric in another cabinet) and I found about 4 yards of a boys print flannel...

just right for receiving blankets for babies...its not a babies print but daddy and grandpa will like it...its a collection of sports  lol....Obviously it was originally for one of my grandsons in their early years....I have made 1 already and have 2 more cut out and there is enough for other items like lap pads or bibs. etc leftover...I will be happy to get it out of the cabinet to downsize more.... and they will be ready for giving away....Its a positive thing!

On the baby quilt I am hand quilting...I have to mark the third and last corners and the last side then quilt that and then I will be ready to bind it....after I get done with the receiving blankets I will get back to that...I want it done before the end of the week...

I seem to be in the middle of a major sewing streak right now and I am loving it but I cant sew fast enough to suit me lol.....I hate to think how bad my sewing room is going to look when I am finished with this round of sewing fever....it was bad before it started lol but I still know where everything is  so far lol....back to sewing , break over lol....more later.....

UPDATE ON BABY QUILT WIP

In a couple weeks the year 2014 will be half over...I got a late start to the year of sewing and quilting by starting out sick in January and having surgery in February and recouping March and April....

In May I really started working on sewing again...and I got a bit overwhelmed at what I had ahead of me in the line of quilting WIP'S....I have really concentrated on finishing some of them since and getting the mountain of batting out of my way.......

I hope the last half of the year I can get most of them quilted...so far in the last 2 weeks I finished 2 baby quilts on the machine and I am in the middle of hand quilting another one....

Today I have 1 side of the baby quilt hand quilted....I have a wide ribbon and feather border going at the moment...it measures about 5 inches wide and it didn't have a corner with it so I spent last night and part of today designing trying to come up with a corner....Without much luck I turned to the block designs I had and found a shell pattern that looked like the feathers in the bigger design so I used it for the corners and I am putting one in the center of each side....it looks pretty neat...Its the most hand quilting I have done in a long time on one piece....no picture today but it will come later....

I am inching closer to getting my other daughters snowball quilt finished...got the fabric couple weeks ago for the back and border...its bigger, will take up all my table space to lay it out....it will be  nice to get it done too...I am sure she would like to have it....back to quilting....more later....

WORKING ON SMALL QUILT FOR GRANDDAUGHTER

Yesterday I tried to organize my leftover batting...what a mess I had....big enough pieces for small quilts with leftover length....sooo I started piecing them as I found quilts to match the batting...kinda backwards huh?....well I used up 3 of those batt pieces this week...2 machine quilting and now I have a 40x50 one in the floor hoop and the center is half quilted so far...

the day is young so I might get all the center done by tonight...lots of space to quilt in but I am not getting elaborate in the center....but I may put a big feather border in the yellow and blue borders...I will know more about that when I get there....

The quilt above is kind  of an unusual quilt...a few years ago my granddaughter spied the fairy print (center block) in a fat quarter...she wanted a quilt made from it...I told her I didn't think there was enough...but she insisted so I tried....I ended up using almost all of it in the centers so its a quilt mostly of  borders and sashes with the colors in that little square in the center....Maybe one day she will be able to use this if she has a girl of her own....

I brought this one out of archives to show you...I got this top back out yesterday also...I think I am going to work on it next...it has been a challenge since day one...as you can see there are 1/2 of a courthouse step block for borders placed end to end....Marking will be a challenge to quilt them...this one will take some thought...I don't think I will ever make this one again....I had put it away twice with the last border unfinished as I could not get it to work....then one day I got it back out again and lo and behold I found the right piece and combination and it worked...I doubt I could be so lucky next time.....But I am glad I stuck with it because I like it!....till next time....more later....

PLAYING AROUND WITH A NEW BLOCK

Yesterday I pretty much spent the day in the sewing room...at times trying to put some things away off my table...then I would get side tracked and find enough leftovers to make something...such as a couple potholders...then I worked on a new block...
this block idea was made by one of the ladies at the quilt meeting this last month... I can't remember the name she called it...I was so interested the idea would not leave me alone so I had to make one up.......I just kept going with the 'stuff' that was on my table...then I made a different version of same block...the light in the big squares....
boy what a difference color values made....if I make a quilt from this block I will really have to watch the color values so an odd one doesn't stick out....then again using the positive and negative opposite each other might work differently....have to play around with this one....I have a lot of light colored prints...more on this one later....

I bet I spent a couple hours trying to figure out what I did with my 'Dewey' blocks....
well today I remembered they were still in the bag I took to the quilt meeting to show...Dah!...I had run across some fabric on the table that would have been right for the Dewey block but could not remember what size triangles I needed and needed to see one of them....maybe today lol.....

I like our nice 70 degree weather we are having but the house feels so cold....maybe its because I have been sitting  beside a hot iron most of the day sewing then I feel cold when I am finished...the temp says 71 in the house so that should be ok so I guess its just me....

Maybe a cup of coffee will warm me up this morning....more later.....

PASTEL BABY QUILT IS FINISHED

I finished the binding on the small baby quilt I machine quilted this week....again I was up late but I wanted to get it finished....I even got the label sewn in it and the irish chain quilt..

I love these pastel modern type quilts...they look so fresh in design and soft and sweet....its a pleasure to work on them....the picture shows it a little brighter than it really is...

I have a chore to do today that has been long overdue....My little ironing board that sits next to me when I am sewing needs a new cover...

I was going to fix it earlier in the week but could not find my electric staple gun....I thought it must be in the basement but rather than risk falling down the stairs I waited till help came along....Last night my son came and he found it in the basement...so now I am in business when I get to it...hopefully today...That little ironing board is becoming an antique lol....I made it in the 60's for use on vacations ..that was before motels thought to put ironing boards in the rooms....it has been many miles and ironed many miles of fabric...

I FINISHED THIS IN MAY FINALLY

While back I kept talking about a quilt that I needed to finish hand quilting after I came home from the hospital that had been laying on the dining table....

well I finished it in late May.....It wasn't the best choice in fabric...flowers were spaced too far in the fabric I thought....I had bought it on sale a long time ago and was just sitting around on the bolt so I have been using it here and there trying to get rid of it....I still have some leftover but it will be good in a scrappy quilt....

The baby quilt that I am machine quilting this week is quilted...now to trim and add the binding I hope today sometime...I have a big batch of laundry to do so I should do that first...but you know how it is...if you want to sew you sew! lol....

Just maybe I can work on another UFO or WIP whichever you like to call them...I have an hour glass quilt that I took the border off so I could add more rows to make it bigger some time ago and I would like to work on that too...I have the fabric for the back and maybe the borders if I add some but I have to wash and iron it before I can use it so I may include that in my laundry today lol....

Well its high noon so I need to get busy with my chores..the weather isn't good today so will be good day to stay indoors and work.....sooo I am outta here.....more later....

PLANS CHANGED FOR UFO SEWING

Sunday turned out to be a bummer!...

After many obstacles in my way to the sewing machine to quilt I finally sat down to work on this baby quilt....as you can tell I didn't get far.... my back start hurting soon after starting....Then my arthritis stared kicking up a fuss so most likely there is rain coming today...I will try again later today to work on this quilt...its been laying around for a couple years now and it would be nice to get it finished...

My fabric came for the border and back that goes on the 'scrap basket' quilt ...

at first I wasn't sure I was going to like it but it is growing on me and I think it will work....I know I didn't want a solid for a border as I didn't use many solids in the quilt and didn't want the border to be the focal point of the quilt ...there will be a dark red narrow border between the main part of the quilt and the blue border....

After looking through all my loose batting I find I better start piecing or making things with the sizes I have....I am getting too many leftover pieces laying around...yesterday I pieced the batt that went into the baby quilt which worked ok so will have more thoughts on my 'batting mountain' later lol....hmmm maybe a fall runner or head start on Christmas....more later.....

WORKING ON UFO'S FOR A CHANGE

It seems the harder and faster I work the behinder I get!!...And that is a fact!!!....Today I sit here thinking about all the piecing and quilting I have waiting for me everyday and sometimes its mind boggling...and today I feel it....It makes me wonder if I will ever see my big pile of UFO's finished...not to mention the big basket of blocks which at the present time is wayyyyyy overflowing...
The basket is in a corner and its piled a lot higher than this right now....

I made up my mind to work on those UFO's today...I have one in mind that may not take too much work to finish..
Its a small quilt one of those modern baby types I did while back..this one was done with the leftovers from the others....I thought I had a picture of it somewhere but after looking I didn't find one....Oh well it will be a fresh picture when its finished a surprise for all of us...lol....hopefully I can finish it by the end of the weekend...

I attended our monthly quilt meeting Thursday and our show and tell revealed most of us is working on 'scrappy' quilts...I took 1 section of my scrap basket quilt to show and gave them basics on how to make one but I doubt if anyone will...they seem to have their own ideas just like me lol....

We are going to change out meeting place again...The monthly rent for the ideal place we were in the first time went way up and our small group could not afford it so we moved on but there were steps and not all convenient so now we are going to move again..this time no steps but farther to drive for a few people...

In a small town and county there just isn't a lot of places to hold meetings even small ones like ours...some places that have the room don't like to rent them out to any groups other than their own preferences....but we will keep trying lol...

Well off to get started...again I am starting late with my day but I will probably be up late so maybe it will even out....more later.....

MORE ON MY CHALLENGE SCRAPPY QUILT

The holiday weekend is over and I spent most of it sewing on the challenge quilt..here it sits in 4 panels so far....I debated on how big to make it but have decided on twin size...here is a pic of the top so far....

I had to order fabric for the borders and the back as I never seem to have the bigger yardages on hand...the smaller border will be a deep red and the bigger outside border will be a blue like some of them in the quilt top....this quilt will be about 65x75 when finished....

I think I am going to machine quilt this one....I don't think all those seams and me would get along hand quilting....I must say this quilt is turning out better than I thought it would but I had enough variety to make it a pretty one....

Today is half over already...I seem to be staying up later at night but then I cant get started in the morning so I have to try to change that as I am losing time lol....today though I want to get out my daughters quilt and add the 2 rows on side and bottom...

then wash up the back that I purchased about 6 months ago for it....with those 2 extra rows I hope I have enough yardage to use what I planned for the back...not sure there will be a border on this one...will have to measure again to be sure....this quilt is the 'sister' to the one I made for my other daughter...other one was blues and reds...this one is softer in color with more greens, pinks and lavenders..

Got more pictures to take and if I wind up the machine I might do some more machine quilting while I wait for the fabric to come....I got really behind from being in hosp. and recouping....so now its try to catch up time.....more later....

MAKING A NEW 'CHALLENGE QUILT'

Finally I am posting....I have been busy with stuff here at home trying to get caught up with stuff I need to do that I haven't taken time to post much....

This past week I had a water line break in the basement...thank god I was home or I would have had a flood down there....a lot of water sprayed all over as it is....plumber will have to come back to fix...he didn't have time that day to do the repair...I am glad he didn't have to have the water shut off all over the house just the line to the downstairs sink....

I have been working on string strips again trying not to let the scrap stuff get to far ahead of me....and I started a new quilt of stars and 9 patch...the original pattern for the block is in Quilters Cache....I made it for a challenge while back...here is that one in archives...I love this pattern....

Speaking of challenges I joined another challenge of sorts....the online quilt group I belong to posted a pattern for a 'scrap basket' quilt....and I am going great guns on it right now....here are some of the panels I have put together so far....I need 25 in all...

I have to put it aside today at least till I get the flowers fixed for the cemetery...Memorial day crept up on me again this year....I guess because I was raised with the holiday being the 30th weekend not before that ....so confusing sometimes lol...

My 'Dewey' blocks are put aside for the time being....and I dug out the 4 patches I had and putting a ivory triangle around each side to put them on point for a good size quilt....I have about half the blocks done for that....

I need to take more pics...I finally finished the small childs quilt I was hand quilting....don't know why I didn't finish before only took me 2 hrs to finish quilting and couple more to bind....grrr...lol....

Well this catches me up for now and just maybe I can get the camera wound up again sometime this week...I know there is more to show....

QUIET EASTER AND SOME SEWING

I hope everyone had a nice Easter Sunday and took a moment to remember why we have this day....I know we did take a few moments to reflect about the season....

Our day was a quiet one...2 of my kids were going to be busy, one with getting a boat ready for the summer season on the water and the other was going fishing for the weekend....Me? I was at my other daughters home visiting with my grandkids as well as my daughter and son in law...

Later in the afternoon my daughter was working on scrapbooking and my granddaughter was working on her jewelry making and I was working on my hand sewn posies for my quilts....all the while we discussed anything that came to mind....just a nice easy afternoon....oh yes the guys were doing their thing too lol....

Today I am going to make an effort to get a quilt I have been working on finishing quilting that has been on the table for months....I am so tired of looking at it but yet I have not finished it....LAZY???? maybe but today I am going to try to finish it so I can bind it and be done with it....

Quilt meeting is coming in about 10 days so will need something to work on...maybe bind that quilt lol....that is a goal to work for ....right???....

For now I need some lunch so happy quilting to you all....more later.....

MINI GRANDMOTHERS FLOWER GARDEN PICTURE

It has been a busy week for me...I had errands to run, more than usual plus I went shopping one day with my daughter and now I am tired and need a couple days to recoup lol....but it was a good time to be out...no snow or rain just sun mixed with warm and cool breezes lol....

I finally got a picture of the mini grandmothers flower garden quilt I have been working on....
I have about 7 more rows to add and maybe I might add a row wider...more on that later....I haven't decided if I want to put a plain border on it and applique a vine or not...I haven't done much applique so far so it could end up a challenge...

I always have something lined up to work on whether I am home or visiting with my family....
now is no exception lol....there are several different posies ready for  half of the white that goes around each one ready to work on...there are some small ones and some large flowers too....I forgot to add that I am making another one with the big flowers....that will be the 3rd one...before I am done with hexes I think every immediate family member will get one someday lol....

While back I ordered small yardage of fabric I thought I would like and I do and have waited for it to go on sale....
I have a favorite block from quilter cache that I seem to like its star pattern and a 9 patch combo....I have made several runners with the pattern and now I want to make a full quilt using this fabric as the color surrounding the stars which will be blues and purples with very light gray background....I have all the fabric except more yardage of this...as of today I have that now...so any time I can get started on a new quilt top....like I really need to lol...the picture doesn't do the fabric justice but it wont be left whole anyway...the biggest piece will be 3 1/2 inches big so it wont look like this when finished..

Hopefully I am getting back into my sewing now so I can get a lot more done...I really got behind this winter.....got lots of ideas for future project too to work out of my head...happy sewing and more later......

TRYING OUT A NEW-OLD BLOCK

Saturday evening I had the opportunity to go into the city with my daughter and son in law...I really enjoyed the evening but came home very tired....I had a lot of  places I needed to go for supplies and got them all done....even a trip to the grocery store for things I cant get here in town....

I have been playing around with a block from an old quilt mag from the 1980's called Deweys dream quilt....I thought I would make up some and see how it would look in a quilt...

then I got curious so I searched the name and found several variations lol...all of them a lot different from each other so I guess I will call my quilt a name and leave 'Dewey' out of it lol.....I think I will be able to use up a lot of my 1 1/2 inch strips leftover from projects in this...I may have to use fresh solids to co ordinate them though, I probably wont have scraps of them big enough....

My plan is to make maybe 1 each night or a few a week till I get what I want them put them together so we shall see how it works out....

It is a rainy afternoon today so I have planned to wash and iron some fabric and get it off the dining room chair...I have too much clutter sitting around right now and its bugging me....

Ok its time to get out of here and get on with my day (got up late today to start with) got to make up for time lost lol.....more later....

GETTING BACK TO SEWING

I am trying to get back into sewing again....since surgery I tire easily so I have not been eager to start things or even finish for that matter....

Before I went to hospital I was concentrating on using up orphan blocks into something useful so logical things were potholders...my family could use them...I have kept them supplied through the years...here are a couple sets I did then....

On my machine when I came home were these sets of strings that I am making to be cut into 2 1/2 strips lengthwise later to go around a block...

I cant tell ya how many blocks I have at the moment they are packaged up and I don't want to go through the big baskets of blocks to find them...I just know I don't have many to go and I can put them all together for a top...
I found a picture already in the archives of the block...I don't have to tell ya though it is going to be a striking top...

On the subject of my health I am doing ok...even my digestion is better than It has been most of my life....I am just tired a lot but according to my granddaughter (she went through this 2 years ago)...I am doing good and being tired is part of it....lol....now if I could just get my back to be ok ...but that is another story lol.....more later....

HOME FROM HOSPITAL--SURGERY

Well here I am again....since I was here last I was taken to emergency at the hospital and had abdominal reconstructive surgery.....I am home now but I am very rocky and sooooo tired...but I am functioning day to day....

It seems this problem has been with me most of my life but decided to shut down my body now after all these years....I am very happy there was no cancer...I was very scared that was what they were going to find....

While recouping in the hospital I did a little hand sewing making some hex posies when I felt like it....I forgot to put a thimble in my little portable bag of sewing so had to let up so as not to get my fingers too sore....

So I am thinking it may be a few weeks yet before I do much sewing while I am getting back on my feet again....might be sooner...right now just taking things a day at a time...

Thank you all for understanding......more later...

SMALL GFG BLOCKS ARE MAKING A NICE QUILT

This is what I have been doing while being sick and tv time...I am now on row 7 with 10 in a row of various colors some leftover from the gfg quilts for the girls....I will make it 17 rows long before I am done....I think the quilt will be about 72x90 with a border on it....

I still have my stack of the colors I want to use for these on the sewing table...most of the time neatly stacked if I can keep them that way...I hope to use up a lot of the florals I have collected over the years...the white you see here is what I am using for the connecting of the posies...

If I don't use all of the colors by the time I get tired of making gfg quilts I think I will use them with some blenders and make either road to Oklahoma quilt or a pinwheel quilt....but more on that if it materializes....pun lol...

I am feeling better but not all sure it was the flu that hit me...I think I need to see the doc about my innards ....I am subject to bouts of gastritis....just hope it isn't going to serious but for now its sew, sew, sew....more later....

FLU BUG HAS HIT HARD!

I hope you all don't think I have deserted my blog...I am afraid I have been sick with a flu bug...its really wicked to say the least....

It hit 9 days ago and I still have the severe abdominal cramps....tonight was the first solid food I had in a week and ha! not sure its going to stay with me....this is the first I have been on line all week...but not much to show and tell anyway as I haven't done any sewing to speak of since the first of the year....I sure am getting a slow start to 2014...and I had soooo many plans and ufos to finish....

I probably wont post any more till I feel better which I hope is very soon....I hate being sick especially with the flu....

My son was here tonight and dug me out again but I don't think I will be going anywhere unless I have to go to the grocery store....I have used up all the soft foods and soup so far and I sure don't want to cook anything....maybe my daughter will get me some things when she comes over....

Well I wanted to let you know what is going on which isn't much but soon I hope I will be back posting and showing progress....more later.....
