MUG RUGS, BAGS AND THOUGHTS

As the title says....i made some mug rugs this week while the scrap box was open...i happen to find enough to make some that were less scrappy....more planned....
that kind i like better than just picking out a scrap and adding it....the one in the foreground on the right is a potholder made from the only block i had left from the wall hanging in the bathroom...it was just too pretty to hide in the odds and ends box forever lol...

if i had room i would sort my scraps according to colors but my sewing room is so small as it is there is hardly enough room for what i cram into it now lol....yesterday i made things a little easier in there though...i have been slowly and i mean slowly trying to organize things a little better...and yes i am finding some things i forgot i had put away....this morning i took my coffee in and sat and stared at the open closet...that is where i want to transfer my fabric to from the cabinet that is taking up valuable space in the room....i was wondering what i could toss to make more room in that closet or find a new 'hiding' place for the crafts that are there....but i came to think that keeping it in that room was the best place....more on this later....

i thought for sure my thread order would be here yesterday....hopefully today it will arrive....i am waiting for colors for the 'last' hour glass table topper and the new bag i am making so i can quilt them.....both green....the bag i got the idea from a scrap of floral that was laying on the sewing table , it kept talking to me lol and i kept playing around till i got this for the front of the bag....

i wish i had enough of the scrap to make the back but it will have to be green but at least it will have an interesting front....i will quilt the front and the back before i put it together so the lining will be quilted already....

this morning i found a pink piece of poly/cotton that is suitable for a lap quilt for someone in the nursing home....i think i had this idea before for this piece as it is cut already....only this time i think i will machine quilt it using the flowers in it as a guide where to put the funky flowers i will quilt....when i was in the nursing home it seems that they are lacking smaller quilts for the residents ....they had to hunt for something for me when my shoulders were cold so i have been thinking along those lines too...maybe long and narrow ones might be nice for a couple ladies....more on this later also.....

this week looks more like fall so far......i have a tree in the back yard that is dropping leaves as i type....that is not a good sign...its early for that but with the drought we had all summer i suppose it was under a lot of stress as a lot of trees in town were so an early fall will probably be upon us this year.....when fall comes around it always makes me think of the past and how my year went and how i can make the best of the year in the time left before a new one rolls around....

i consider myself lucky to be here as 2 winters ago i got very sick and if i hadn't been in the hosptial i would probably not be here today...i do wish though that i had more stamina and better legs so get out more than i do and maybe make 36 hour days instead of 24 lol....i try to cram as much into my day as i can with my health but its not easy sometimes...

ok enough of thoughts for one day....i think i am going to get out and drive somewhere this afternoon and enjoy the weather 70 is nearly perfect for me....more later.....

HEXES AND HOUR GLASS

this morning i am having trouble getting started with my day....when i loaded a bobbin in my machine i noticed my bobbin box had a lot of bobbins that only had a few feet on them....so that told me to get out the hexes and use those few feet of thread for basting my hexes for the gfg quilt
i need to start adding the white ones around more blocks like the picture so i can add them to make a row and it will take a lot of white ones....i seem to be always running low on those....if i start working on this quilt again i wont be able to put it down....and i have a lot more things i need to work on too....

i quit and now not feeling very well...not sure why but i am going to try to sew and forget my 'ails'...my back is also bothering me so that could stop my sewing cause it probably hurts from all the sewing i have done lately....

i finished this runner yesterday....

wasn't sure i had the right color for quilting but luckily i did....the hour glass blocks i made years ago lots of different color combos...made one quilt from them and for some reason i made a whole bunch more....i am trying to get them used up...why on earth i made so many is beyond me....i guess i was pretty new at the strip piecing at the time so it was fun to make them....but now i think i only have 1 more runner made with green  to finish and i hope i dont find more hour glass blocks hiding in my basket lol.....

a bit ago i was thumbing through a mag and found an idea  for a modern block table runner from an advertisement of a big quilt....just what i need another idea but i seem to thrive on them lol....i just need someone to come after me and finish as i think them up lol....hopefully i will feel like working this one out later today i am anxious to see how it turns out....and it will use up some more odd pieces of batting...

i reordered some fabric other day and have another order coming that i am waiting on....have a few pieces of fabric to wash and iron and will include the new order when it gets here this week, maybe get them all washed up ....then i might be ready for working on my fall color quilt....

i am getting very anxious to see what it will look like....from the block i made and the adjustment i will make on part of it i think it will be very pretty with a big variety of colors....

i think its time for me to lie down for a bit and see if i can shake my ailments so i can get on with things....maybe a nap will help.....more later....

PATCHES AND POINTS QUILT FINISHED

Its been another busy week and week end for me....i made up my mind that i was going to get the patches and points quilt done finally and i did...

it took till Monday night before i was finished with this...i dont know why i had trouble keeping at it till it was done unless it was the double stitching around the border...i think i have 1 more 9 patch quilt to finish before i am done with the multicolor patches i made years ago....i will be glad when all is finished....i got carried away making them...lol

i remembered i hadn't posted a picture of my wall hanging i put in the bathroom....for some reason the walls a gold color doesn't want to show up  behind the hanging... but the wall hanging too ok...i should have made it bigger i think, i love it

i like these colors so much the next quilt i make will be oranges, reds, browns and golds....i showed the block i will perfect that will be the next one as soon as i get all my colors together....

i did a self imposed color study about  a year ago i think with pastel hoffman and moda watercolors that made a series of quilts in different patterns and sizes before i was done...i have yet to quilt several of them...but i made an original block for the first and second one and i might make it again using all batiks next....i am thinking about it here is the pastel one with green border...

i think it will look very good in batiks if i choose the right ones...havent decided on a color scheme yet...i have some others i want to try to get finished before i start another one....this one has to be too...

i started making a bag yesterday and got the front the way i wanted it...it all started from a piece of fabric i didn't want to throw away....so i made a design on front and finished the fabric off by using on the sides  of the front...but i cant quilt the whole thing till my thread order comes...i didn't have the right color so that is on hold for now...

i have 3 mug rugs made but from the looks of the scrap pile i should make more....i have a pretty good supply of binding in there that could be used up on those too....

maybe i can get the sewing room straightened up some too it sure needs it....and of course the stack of fabric is growing high on the table again....well back at it again.....more later.....

TRYING OUT NEW DESIGN

Recently my granddaughter visited and decided she wanted a quilt of the reds, oranges, browns then added blue to the combo....at first i thought she was out of her mind as it was out of my comfort zone....and then she said put them together in a pattern....lordy my mind went into overdrive trying to figure out what to use....after she ok'ed it and we revised it some we seettled on this and i thought it needed more so i added a piano key outside border...well i started quilting it this week....

if she reads this blog wont she be suprised???? lol....i think this afternoon though i will be taking a break from it to rest my poked fingers lol...one thing is still up in the air on this quilt...the beige border will need some extensive quilting and my first thought was feathers as those are my favorite but this quilt is modern and feathers are traditional so not a good mix i dont think....i have several stencils of geos and i could even draw something if i could think of good subject to use....i will have to decide soon as i am 3/4 done with the center...i intend to  define each piano key with quilting...a lot of work but i think it will need it....so a lot of work yet before this masterpiece is finished...

lunch was brought in for a few days this week so the dishes havent piled up to much but i have some in the sink from the week end that i better wash up....my son will be here i think tonight ....who knows maybe i will bake something this afternoon while working in the kitchen and send part of it home with him so i wont eat the whole thing lol and besides i could use a little heat in the house....its getting colder outside and i might have to use the furnace soon...old bones cant take the cold like i used to...

ok time to go do something constructive....and of course if i really get bored i can always go clean up my scraps laying all over the sewing room....sure dont take long for them to pile up...more later....

COUNTRY TABLE RUNNER DONE

I  dont believe it! i got ahead of the pictures today....ok so i have to be ahead to have something to take a picture of....nope i havent lost my mind....what i meant was....i took a picture of my runner i was working on before i quilted it but didn't get it posted and now its finished...

here it is just before i quilted it on the machine...these are preprinted blocks that i added sashing around to create this runner....i made my daughter placemats a couple years ago from the panels....i didn't know i had this much left...but now it will be out of my fabric cabinet yay!....i think she will be suprised when she gets it....i finished it tonight...i was getting so tired of hand sewing but stuck with it ....

tomorrow i have the hexagon table runner planned to finish...tonight i lined up batting pieces....i am going to piece the batting so i dont cut up a new batt....i have so much batting laying around i need to do a lot more to use it all up...

i got all the fabric put away in the cabinet and i just dont know how to act....the arm of the sewing machine cabinet is cleaned off

this cabinet is over 50 years old...i have worn off the finish across the front from all the use but i tell ya....i would not trade it for the world....i just wish i could get a  new machine to fit in without gaps....couple years ago i bought another machine head like the one i already have so i could always have a working head to rely on....i was suprised i could still get one even if it was used, its old too lol....

well its been a very long day today and i am tired so gotta get some sleep so i can get up and watch my sewing shows on public tv in the morning....then off to the sewing room for the day....goodnight world.....more later....

2 QUILTS FINISHED

It's been a busy week here at home...this new sewing streak has me moving from one thing to another all day long but i am getting things done...

In the last 2 weeks i have made a little girls quilt with butterflies from irish chain pattern...hard to see the butterflies in the picture...
i have had the print fabric i know for at least 14 years...i remember where i bought it ...i am very suprised i haven't used it before this..the fabric is very pretty in person...the quilt is one width by about 45 inches....then while i was working on it and during the time when i got bored with it i started another quilt i mentioned in previous post...the red/blue hole in barn door quilt....well i am finished with it now...got it done this morning...

its the little boys quilt i decided to make when i found this combo staring at me when i opened the cabinet...i have just a scrap left of the very busy blue print....the color works in this quilt but i passed over it lots of times wondering what to do with it , it always seemed to busy to work in anything up till now and this time it seemed to be just right...

After all this sewing i been doing i have a stack of small pieces of batt ....i already has some stuffed in here and there in a shelf but now there is a whole lot more...looks like all those string  blocks i made will be made into bigger blocks and used for potholders....

this is just the smaller stack of small pieces of batt...the other one sits on the floor in family room behind the chair for now...this stack i will work on first i think it has the smallest pieces in it....the other stack has bigger pieces that maybe i can piece together for runners...without making too many seams...

got to take a break from sewing later today and buy some groceries....i think i will make out menus for this next week with things that i can make ahead so i dont have to stop sewing for long...good thing i like leftovers lol...

it is such a pretty day this friday that i should take advantage of it and go do a little other shopping....fall is really showing up now....hard to keep the house warm at night but i am going to be frugal and not heat the house i hope till late october or november....more later about that lol....

well its back to sewing after lunch....i have a table runner all pinned ready to machine quilt....i have been lagging in that department for awhile while hand quilting those quilts....so now its back to  practicing again....i also want to machine quilt that hexagon table topper i posted earlier for my daughter so most likely that will get done sometime over the week end...so for now its ta-ta....more later ....

ANOTHER QUILT STARTED

I thought i would pop in and see what was going on while my dishes were soaking....yes i let them pile up while i was sewing lol....not sure that i mentioned that nothing much gets done here when i get a sewing streak and this one is proving to be a whopper....either that or i mixed a little too much coffee w/caffeine into my decaf this morning....either way i am lovin' it!.....

I should stay out of my fabric cabinet....when looking yesterday i found a piece of fabric right for a little boys quilt..it looks kind of like streaked denim and i found red to go with it and some navy blue...so i proceeded to make some blocks.....
its a variation of either shoo fly or hole in barn door...geez i cant remember which ...i always get them mixed up...i just know the triangles point different for each lol...i wish i had some more fabric that would have contrasted it more but i didn't and i didn't want to vary it too much with other colors...today i worked on it and got the top done ....i had just enough of the mottled blue for the back...its in the frame now and i will work on it tonight....

i got the other quilt done yesterday....sorry no pic yet but it will come this week...going to try to finish couple other things too....

of course there is more....lol....the 4sq-4patch is in the works too...now that i have decided to make it big instead of 2 smaller quilts to keep i will be working on it too....i have made up a section to see how it was progressing and i like it for a scrap quilt....much better than the ugly green one the 4 patches were before i tore it up....here is picture of both  judge for yourself lol

and now the ugly green one that used to be

for me there is no comparison...not a big lover of stripes or certain colors of green of which is the border...so no wonder the 4 patches didn't stand a chance in this quilt...but i will like the top one better...i do already lol...

my poor sewing room looks like tornado turned around in that room....if i can stop sewing long enough i need to straighten it up....at least make an effort to put fabric back in cabinet...3 giant stacks are sitting ready to topple over on the edge of sewing machine arm...and i got another order today and will need to wash and iron that and what i didn't get done the last order....now i am going to try not to look at fabric in stores or on line for at least 3 months into January 2013......

the family room looks like a small quilt shop right now....i have had quilts laying all over trying to figure out which of them goes to the 3 new additions to my great nephews.... all 3 are in the same family and all babies were born this past month lol...wonder if they planned it that way....i am afraid the kids wont care for it when they get bigger...most want their own day lol....

well the dishes are calling lol....and i think i will get my mac salad made while in the kitchen...fish and chips for supper tonight too along with fresh strawberries....hope for a good movie or something to watch so i can work on the new quilt...maybe i can set another record this week.....more later....

A NEW SEWING STREAK STARTED

Well our reunion went off without a hitch and a good turnout made for a pleasant afternoon....i took cinnamon rolls and only came home with 2 out of a big pan...enough for my breakfast Labor Day....always nice to have rolls for a weekend breakfast...that goes back to my childhood memories...mom and dad would get groceries on saturday and always made a trip to the bakery for goodies to have for sunday breakfast.....nice memory....

last weeek before Labor Day i decided to make a bag to carry my sewing hexies, thread and blocks i was working on with me when i go places....dug deep in the cabinet and found somethig perfect for what i wanted....
At the reunion my sister in law tried to convince me to make more and offer them for sale....i scoffed at it so far although i may be making some for my daughter to give as small Christmas gifts....she hasn't decided on that yet, hope she dont wait too long...

After baking the rolls on last Tuesday i decided tomake french bread....there was a motive there...i didn't want to go to the store because i was out of bread and break my momentum of sewing so i thought i could make bread and sew between times to take care of the bread....as you can tell by the picture part of the loaf is gone lol...made good toast, french toast , etc....before its done i will probably make some seasoned croutons to finish it off...it will also be good to have with my spaghetti this week....
What was I sewing on? well i was looking at some fall fabric in the cabinet and decided tomake my other daughter a table topper...she hasn't gotten a hexie one yet like my other daughter and my sons gf so she is over due for hers....i had been collecting oranges, browns and reds lately so i had what i needed to just dive right in and get started...and this is the outcome waiting for backing and batting and to be machine quilted then a brown binding on the outside..

it is the biggest one i have made to date but i am sure i will be making more....the size is 35 inches in dia....her table is 48 so it will be a good size for it....

the wall hanging i was working on last week is all done and hung now in the bathroom but the wall still needs more....so i am thinking of making a 'quilt' wall and the next one will be narrow and longer to fit the wall...it will balance it out i think....now to find what i want to use for pattern....that will be the hard part...lol....

i have been quilting on a quilt i started last Tuesday....got it quilted in 4 days and i am sewing the binding on today....i should be done with it tonight....picture will follow after i get done....

got some cooking i need to do to have on hand so i dont have to stop and do it when i am in middle of sewing.... mac salad seems like a good selection for one thing and will be quick to eat....i just hate to stop when i get a good run of sewing lol....speaking of running i gotta go get busy then find a good movie to watch while i finish that quilt.....more later.....
